Description | Original manuscript, diagrams and printed copies of papers on colour-blindness by William Pole.
Two papers communicated to the Royal Society by Charles Manby. The first paper 'On Colour Blindness' (1856) read in abstract at a meeting on 19 June 1856, published in the 'Proceedings of the Royal Society' vol 8, 1857, is present in the collection as a manuscript including a single diagram. A modified version of the paper with the same title (1859) was read on 7 April 1859 and published in the 'Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society', vol 149, 1859. The original coloured diagrams for the 1859 paper are included in this collection along with an offprint of the paper. The offprint is bound with a later printed paper by Pole 'On the Present State of Knowledge and Opinion in Regard to Colour-Blindness' from the 'Transactions of the Royal Society of Edinburgh', vol 37, no 22, 1893.
Pole states in his Royal Society papers that: "my object in this paper is to state my own case of Colour-Blindness, which I believe to be one of the most decided on record; and to show that the general phenomena attending this defect of vision are more simple, uniform, and consistent than is generally supposed".
Also includes a report on Pole's 1856 paper by Sir John Herschel, submitted to the Council of the Royal Society, later published in Proceedings, vol 10, 1860. |
