| Administrative history | Sharp was born in Bradford, the son of merchant John Sharp and his wife Mary (nee Clarkson). He worked as a merchant's apprentice, schoolmaster and bookeeper before being invited to join the Royal Observatory, Greenwich by Astronomer Royal John Flamsteed in 1688. He contributed two planisphere's to Flamsteed's Atlas Coelestis, the largest star map of its time. |
