| Description | Thanking Russell for his letter and enclosure of a lecture. He asks Russell to search his memory for JJT [Joseph John Thomson] as a mathematical student. He has nothing on this except a remark by W D Niven to Rayleigh's father that he was rather afraid of Thomson. Most of the mathematics in his books was simple. He once heard Thomson talking to Dr Hobson on Bessel's functions and giving him some points which Rayleigh could not understand. In a postscript, he notes Thomson attending lectures by Cayley and Adams, which was uncommon. |
