Title | Letter from W H [William Henry] Bragg, Sea Cot, Bigbury on Sea, South Devon, to [Joseph] Larmor |
Creator | Bragg; Sir; William Henry (1862-1942); British physicist |
Date | 15 August [1922?] |
Description | He has not read The Times daily, but he sees there has been a discussion of the acoustics of public buildings in which Larmor took part. None of the letters he has seen refer to the long series of researches carried out in America, in the Harvard Transactions and subsequent work which may be found in Science Abstracts. A satisfactory formula was found to calculate the quantity of absorption material required for a hall of given volume. When the County Council Hall was built, Knox [Ralph Knott?] asked him to say what he thought the acoustical properties were likely to be. Bragg told him he might be obliged to put in absorbing matreial as there was a chance of too much reverberation, referring him to the American work. He has a letter from Knox saying that the evil had been exaggerated and he was adding material with expectation of success. Reverberation is one factor, but there are other considerations. He is under the impression that architects do not know how much research has been done. |
