| Description | Writes regarding the 'Challenger' list. All have seen it except Sir W H Flower, and all agree to it but Sir Joseph Hooker suggested the inclusion of Chile. James finds Chile was included in the recent grant of '58 sects.'. There are no scorings in Dr [John] Murray's list, nor does any member of the Committee mark an institution as being more important than another in view of distribution.
James sends Mr [William Turner Thiselton-]Dyer's answer to Foster's letter [not attached], which he does not think Foster has seen. This has been passed around and was sent in by Mr Salvin. With regards the suggested separate distribution of the botanical volumes, Dyer does not send in any list of institutions. Murray's list includes the distribution of botany volumes one and two so that the whole list would require reconsideration. James has gone carefully over the original list for complete sets and volumes as well as the 58-set lists and casual addition with the result of finding that Lund University and Columbia College, New York, are duplicated so he has struck them out.
Foster will remember that Mr Langley had been promised grants of £10 and £15 from the publication fund. Foster wrote to Langley on 20th February saying that the President and Council had granted the sums. In fact the Committee of Papers, meeting on 20th February, recommended the grants for the papers to be published in the 'Journal of Physiology'. The matter never apparently came before the Council. James mentions this as a memorandum of the position.
Dr [David] Bruce has sent two negatives of the flies with two prints. These are superior to any which the Society has for the 'Further Report'. The photographs in the report are seven in number, to form one plate. Asks if the new photographs are to supersede any of those already estimated for, but which are not actually in hand, or whether they are to be additional.
Regarding the [George] Boole manuscripts, Mr Falk called and James said the Society would undertake the guarding or binding and he appears to be well satisfied. Falk will help in any way they wish during the binding and has undertaken to personally deliver the manuscript very shortly.
The Huygens object glasses and accessories were taken to the Hague today by Dr Brester of Delft. |
