Title | Copy letter from Michael Foster, to the Under Secretary of State, Colonial Office, Downing Street, S.W. |
Date | 19 November 1896 |
Description | In the course of investigations which are being carried on in London under the direction of the Royal Society, in reference to the Tsetse Fly disease, complementary to those being carried out in Zululand by Dr [David] Bruce, two gentlemen Mr K F T Buee, Assistant Colonial Surgeon, West Coast of Africa, and Mr B W Quarley Papafio, Assistant Colonial Surgeon, Gold Coast Government, have been instructed in the methods of observing the haematozoon associated with the Tsetse Fly disease. Since these gentlemen are or may be stationed in districts where Tsetse fly occurs, it would be very desirable that their ability to observe should be made use of.
Neither gentleman possess a microscope of the kind necessary for making the required observations, and Foster is directed to suggest to the Secretary of State for the Colonies the desirability of providing the Gold Coast Government with such a microscope so that one or other of the gentlemen might make use of it.
The cost of such an instrument would be about £15 with about £3 or £4 required for additional appliances specially suited for the particular investigation. The Royal Society will be happy to purchase for the Government the instrument and appliances and have them, when properly packed for transmission, sent to the Colonial Office, or to any other destination which the Under Secretary may suggest. |
