Title | Copy letter from Robert William Frederick Harrison, to Michael Foster, to the Under Secretary of State, India Office, S.W. |
Date | 24 November 1896 |
Description | At the instigation of Her Majesty's Secretary of State for the Colonies, the Royal Society has appointed a Committee to forward the researches of Surgeon-Major [David] Bruce, now resident in Zululand, on the Tsetse fly or Nagana disease of South Africa.
In the course of the investigation the Committee has become impressed with the desirability of possessing for observation, animals affected by the Surra disease prevalent in certain parts of India, as this disease, which has been studied in India by Dr Lingard, presents striking analogies to the Nagana disease.
It is believed that under certain precautions animals affected with Surra might be brought to England. Asks if Her Majesty's Secretary of State for India would assist a scientific enquiry which has important practical bearings, by placing the Royal Society in communication with proper authorities by which arrangements may be made for transporting some animal or animals affected with Surra, and placing them under the charge of the Royal Society's Committee. |
