Title | Copy letter from Arthur William Rucker, to Richard Tetley Glazebrook, [Fellow of the Royal Society] |
Date | 18 May 1897 |
Description | A number of papers have been received on which Rucker would like Glazebrook's opinion.
The first is a paper from [Arthur] Schuster which Rucker thinks ought to be published somewhere, however it is of a more controversial nature than is usual for the 'Proceedings [of the Royal Society]'. As the calculations are distinctly an additional contribution to the subject, Rucker is inclined to admit it if Glazebrook agrees.
There is a paper from [Joseph Wilson] Swan concerning resin which Rucker would have marked for the 'Proceedings' if it were not for the diagrams. These could no doubt be reduced in size but will loose their interest if the details are lost. On the other hand some of them when reproduced will be nothing more than very good photographs of Lichtenberg's[?] figures. Rucker thinks the paper should be accepted but the number of photos should be largely reduced. If Glazebrook agrees Rucker thinks the best plan will be to refer the paper to Silvanus Thompson and to bring it up at the next meeting of the Committee.
The third paper is one sent in officially by Common as Secretary of the Joint Permanent Eclipse Committee which is too long for the 'Proceedings' and is accompanied by an abstract so it is evidently intended for the '[Philosophical] Transactions [of the Royal Society]'. The author is [Joseph Norman] Lockyer and the paper consists almost entirely of a description of the arrangements made for seeing the eclipse, which was actually not seen, and some temperature observations. It does not appear to Rucker to be the sort of paper usually presented in the 'Transactions'. Some of the astronomers are said to be anxious to take all the accounts of eclipses et cetera from the Society and to publish them in the 'Astronomical Journal' and if the Society refuse to print an official report this movement may be strengthened. Rucker would be inclined to bring this matter before the Committee of Papers on Thursday with a view to seeing whether they wish it to be dealt with by the Sectional Committee in the ordinary way. If they do there will be a difficulty regarding referees. Rucker does not send this paper as he thinks the information he has provided is sufficient to enable Glazebrook to judge of the problem but he would like Glazebrook's approval before going direct to the Committee of Papers. |
