TitleCopy letter from Robert William Frederick Harrison, to Professor Henrici, Fellow of the Royal Society
Date26 January 1898
DescriptionHarrison, at the request of the Chairman of the Mathematics Committee (Professor Darwin), sends a draft report on Mr Sheppard's paper 'On the geometrical treatment of the 'normal curve' of statistics, etc.' together with the original paper and the reports of the referees (Major McMahon and Professor Pearson) for Henrici's consideration. Asks Henrici to make a note on the report whether or not he concurs or to communicate with the Chairman on the matter.

The Chairman desires that these four documents may be sent on to the other members of the Committee with the least possible delay:
Professor Hill, Professor Elliott, Dr Hobson, A E H Love, Professor Darwin.

Enclosed draft report entitled: 'Draft report on Mr. Sheppard's paper: 'On the geometrical treatment of the 'normal curve' of statistics, with especial reference to correlation and to the theory of error.' The Committee think that Professor Pearson's whole report should be communicated to Sheppard and the request that he considers the criticisms and adopts such modifications. However, whilst Pearson's views are valuable, the printing of the paper shall not be dependant on Sheppard's adoption of Pearson's views. They wish the paper to be later returned to Pearson to draw his attention to the desirability of allowing the author considerable latitude in the treatment of his subject. Regarding McMahon's report, the Committee do not think that the remarks on pp. 56-58 are controversial and therefore will not pass on this criticism to the author.
