| Description | As the Meteorological Office Superannuation Committee has received special powers to act during the long vacation, Harrison encloses the report of the Committee for the information of the Meteorological Council, although it cannot be presented to the Council of the Royal Society till October. Thinks Strachey may take it as probable that the report of the Committee will be adopted by the President and Council but a formal notice will be sent.
The report states that after hearing the views of the Meteorological Council, except Dr Buchan's who was absent, the Committee appointed by the Royal Society's Council brought a report on providing funds for the superannuation of the staff of the Meteorological Council before the Government in 1881. Quotes reply from the Treasury that the Lords cannot recognize that the members of Council accepted service on the grounds that they were to receive superannuation allowances. The Committee think the establishment of a pension fund essential and it seems a matter for regret that no provision has been made by the Meteorological Council for that purpose in the 17 years which have elapsed.
The Committee are unable to advise the Council of the Royal Society to approach the Government on the subject and recommend the Council impress on the Meteorological Council the importance of making early provision for the superannuation of their staff. If further aid is required the Committee think that the proper time to approach the Government for further aid would be after a pension fund has been provided. |
