Description | Reports of the Astronomer Royal and Sir J Norman Lockyer on Indian Observatories have been considered by the Observatories Committee of the Royal Society and the Committee submit the following recommendations and remarks.
Briefly describes the kind of work the Indian Observatories should be directed to. They think a suitable site for the Observatory can be found at Kodaikanal. A new spectroscope should be purchased without delay for observations on solar physics and an instrument for photographing the surface of the sun in monochromatic light. The Committee approve and attach great importance to the suggestion that a magnetic survey of India should be undertaken and enclose a minute by Professor [Arthur William] Rucker on the conditions which should be fulfilled [not attached]. In view of the suggested magnetic survey the Committee approve the proposal to establish a permanent magnetic observatory in the north of India. The Committee also recommend that a small Board of Visitors composed of a few scientific officials selected by the Indian Government make an annual inspection of Indian Observatories and report to the Indian Government on their condition and administration. An annual report by the Government Astronomer of India and the Superintendent of Magnetic Survey should be submitted to the Observatories Committee of the Royal Society. |
