| Description | Asks Rhodes' assistance in furthering a scientific investigation of great importance; an enquiry into certain tropical diseases, especially Malaria and Blackwater fever.
Under the auspices of a Committee consisting of members appointed by the Royal Society and representatives of the Colonial Office, three skilled observers are being sent to East Central Africa to make investigations. It is proposed the gentlemen should begin in Blantyre. It will be of great importance for the men to be able to communicate freely with the Committee at home. Understands the Colonial Office has approached the British South Africa Company with the view of obtaining a concession that telegrams might pass from Zomba to London at a reduced rate, if not free of charge. Lister has been requested by the Committee to ask Rhodes to use his great influence with the Company towards securing this concession. |
