Title | Copy letter from Arthur William Rucker, to Professor Poincare |
Date | 24 January 1899 |
Description | No very active steps can be taken by the Provisional International Committee until after April. The delegates were requested to form committees in their own countries and to forward their reports on the Royal Society scheme within [six?] months, i.e. before 30 April. After that the Provisional Committee will draw up a final scheme after considering the reports.
Since the conference broke up the following steps have been taken: The British Committee drew up a statement of the reasons which led the Royal Society to adopt the systems of registration and clarification embodied in their scheme. This has been distributed among the delegates.
A document was circulated reminding delegates of their duties and asking them to report on what was being done in their respective countries. Rucker understands from M [Darbone] that the Academy of Sciences had appointed a Committee which was doing all that is necessary in France. The news from Germany was satisfactory but does not know what attitude they will adopt. The two most important countries which were not represented at the Conference were Russia and Italy.
Has written to the [?] Academy of Sciences and also had some correspondence with General Rykatcheff and another gentleman from Cambridge - Mr Shipley - who attended Imperial Academy of Medicine at St Petersburg and took a formal letter of introduction. The result of all these negotiations has been quite satisfactory.
Regarding Italy Professor Michael Foster has been in touch with Prefessor [Masson?] and others and hopes that they will go work in that country. Is sending a complete list of the literature of the conferences [not enclosed]. |
