| Description | Urgent appeal to the Government to propose the House of Commons a grant in aid to enable a modest scale expedition to the Antarctic.
£40,000 toward an expedition has already been subscribed in England. Notes this is the first time that the Royal Society, Royal Geographical Society and other scientific bodies have combined to organize and dispatch an expedition. The national and representative character of the expedition is emphasized by His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales having consented to be Patron and His Royal Highness the Duke of York to be Vice-Patron.
An appeal has been received from the scientific bodies of Germany to co-operate with a German expedition, which the letter authors think renders it still more incumbent on England to commence their preparations without delay. Explains the advantages of co-operation between the German and English expeditions.
Briefly outlines the aims, estimated costs and length of the proposed expedition. Encloses a memorandum containing an explanation of the objects of the expedition [not attached]. The work of the greatest practical utility will be that connected with terrestrial magnetism which will entail construction of a special vessel. The Lords Commissioners of Admiralty have undertaken to furnish the scientific instruments.
Payments of the Government Grant might be spread over four or five years. |
