Title | Copy letter from Michael Foster, to the Right Honorable William Henry Smith, First Lord of the Treasury |
Date | 28 April 1888 |
Description | Foster reminds the Government of the fact that the 'Royal Society's Catalogue of Scientific Papers' was printed at their command, and consists of eight quarto volumes with the first six covering 1800-1863 produced in response to a Treasury minute of 28 November 1864, and the supplementary two volumes up to 1873 having also been sanctioned in a letter of 4 January 1876.
The President and Council of the Royal Society note that due to the value of these volumes to science and the clear need for an extension to the catalogue, they have compiled a supplementary catalogue for an additional decade which is now ready for press. Foster gives the cost to the Society as 885 pounds and 19 shillings, and asks whether the Government might apply to Parliament to print this supplement, amounting to three quarto volumes, at the National expense. Foster also reminds Smith of the proceeds earnt from the catalogue between 1875 and 1888, in addition to those earnt from sales on behalf of Her Majesty's Stationary Office by Messrs Murray and Messrs Eyre & Spottiswoode. |
