Title | Copy letter from Michael Foster, to Robert Arthur Talbot Gascoyne-Cecil, 3rd Marquess of Salisbury, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Russian Governors |
Date | 7 January 1888 |
Description | Request for Cecil to convey the thanks of the Royal Society to Sir Robert Marier, Her Majesty's Ambassador at St Petersburg, for his assistance to William Bateson, Fellow of St John's College, Cambridge, on his travels through Central Asia as funded by a grant from the Government Fund for Scientific Research which was administered by the Royal Society.
In addition to the assistance of Marier, Foster asks for thanks to be conveyed to others mentioned in the preliminary report by Bateson as having lent assistance and granted permission to travel, namely General Kolpakoffsky, the General Governor of the Steppes; General Maslokovietz, Governor of Orenburg; General Protsenko, Governor of the Oblast of Jurgai; Major-General Levintsoff, Governor of Ablast of Akmolinsk; Major-General Schettinine, Governor of the Oblast of Semipatatinsk. The journey is noted as having been undertaken to explore certain lakes to determine whether there was any evidence, and if so what kind, of their fauna having undergone variations due to changes of condition.
Also includes five separate letters of thanks by Foster, enclosed with the main letter, for Cecil to send to the Russian Governors who assisted Bateson. |
