| Description | In reply to the Under Secretary's letter of 14 August, the questions therein referred to the Royal Society for their opinion will be submitted to the Council at their next meeting on 30 October.
With the concurrence of the President [William Huggins] there can be no reasonable doubt that the Society would gladly undertake to assist the Secretary of State for India by appointing a Committee, probably the present Observatories Committee, to consider and advise in the matter of Mr Eliot's successor in the Indian Meteorological Department. The general feeling of the Observatories Committee was that it would be possible, on the terms named, to secure the services of a comparatively young man of well-proved scientific ability and attainment, such as would rapidly acquire the necessary special knowledge and experience, and who might be expected soon to take scientific rank with the heads of the European and American Meteorological Services. To ensure this result it would be necessary that he should be as far as possible relieved from routine administration so as to leave his time free for consideration of wider questions involving scientific investigation and in particular that he would be trained in the special features of the work in India by the present Director. |
