Title | Copy letter from Robert William Frederick Harrison, to Sir Michael Foster, [Secretary, Royal Society] |
Date | 9 January 1903 |
Description | This morning a letter arrived from the Foreign Office the purport of which it set forth in the enclosed memorandum [not enclosed]. It seemed to Foster important that something should be done at once to stop the Foreign Office from doing anything by way of approving the proposal about Castellani, until the Committee had had chance to consider the matter. Harrison consulted Bruce who agreed and the two went to the Foreign Office together and saw Clement Hill. Hill eventually agreed to do nothing until after next Friday's meeting but does not wish to wait longer as estimates are sent to Treasury this month.
Hill mentioned that the Foreign Office are proposing to spend the money mentioned on Harrison's memorandum but would be glad to have a more definite statement than at present, as to the propriety of embarking on these expensive measures. Harrison promised that he would have a reply immediately after next Friday's meetings and is sending the enclosed memorandum and copies of Christy's letters to the whole Committee. Is summoning the Officers to meet on Thursday and hopes Foster will be back in time. |
