| Description | The situation in Uganda regarding the outbreak of Sleeping Sickness is a very grave one. The work done by Dr Castellani has been meritorious, but not decisive. The Royal Society proposes to immediately send out Lieutenant Colonel David Bruce, a pathologist of high regard, and Dr Nabarro, to work under Castellani. It is hoped that after two or three months the investigations will be so advanced that junior observers will take over, but perhaps six months should be set aside.
The Royal Society's funds have been exhausted in offering honoraria to other observers, and so they hope the Government will furnish Bruce with £500 so that he can obtain all that he requires.
Sleeping Sickness is contagious, and so the Committee propose £5000 be provided in order to carry out measures of isolation. The knowledge of the circumstances is not enough to enable them to make suggestions as to the next steps to take, but think the method of isolation a good one warranting the large expense. No action should be taken regarding the appointment of Castellani as permanent Bacteriologist to the Protectorate, and it is not necessary for Dr Christy to be retained as an observer. |
