Title | Copy letter from Archibald Geikie, to the Under Secretary of State for India, India Office |
Date | 29 July 1905 |
Description | The Under Secretary's letter of 5 July, 22514/1903, transmitting copy of a despatch with enclosures from the Commissioner of the Uganda Protectorate, regarding the case of one of the Indian Contingent who is suffering from trypanosome disease, has been considered by the Committee of the Royal Society charged with investigation into Sleeping Sickness in Uganda, and Geikie is directed by that Committee to suggest the India Office should be informed of the danger of Sleeping Sickness being introduced into India by members of the Indian contingent who have contracted the disease.
Although the Committee is presently without information on the subject, it is within the bounds of possibility that a fly indigenous to India may exist by means of which Sleeping Sickness may be transmitted from the sick to the healthy. The Committee therefore think it their duty to point out the desirability of the Indian Contingent in Uganda being stationed at a safe distance from the infected area and the region in which the Tsetse Fly is known to exist. |
