| Description | The Smithsonian Institution acts as a collecting and distributing agency for scientific publications both in England and from the United States at their expense. These arrangements were made voluntarily by the Smithsonian in order to facilitate the distribution of scientific literature and were not initiated by societies over here. Harrison discusses the relationship between Smithonian and societies in England including receiving volumes of the reports of papers that the Royal Society hardly wanted but considered impolite to refuse. If the Smithsonian wish to reduce their distribution costs the most natural first step would be for them to communicate with all institutions to which they send their voluminous publications and ask whether or not they are desired. |
