| Description | 'As you may remember, we have here an etching by Rajon of Ouless's portrait of Mr Charles Darwin, the original of which I am told is in the possession of your family. Can you tell me whether, as is most probable, the copyright passed with the picture, or whether it was reserved by the artist or any other owner; and, in the former event, would your family give permission for its reproduction as a plate in the new edition of the Record which is being prepared?
My reason for asking all this is that the President has come to the opinion that this portrait is the most satisfactory one for the purpose, and I shall be much obliged if you can give me the information necessary to enable us to reproduce it without fear of the law.' |
