TitleCopy letter from Robert William Frederick Harrison, to Sir [Thomas] Lauder Brunton, Fellow of the Royal Society
Date17 October 1912
DescriptionThe lady already using the Library occasionally is the same Miss Smith as is mentioned in Dr Stretton's letter to Brunton. She came here several weeks ago, with a personal introduction from a medical man and was allowed to consult books. She now evidently wants to be able to borrow books to work from at home. She is quite a respectable and bona fide worker, but she is not a student of science, and wants the books for the purpose of translating or summarizing papers to earn a living by. Harrison hesitates to allow the books to leave the Library for this purpose, as it might withdraw them from use by Fellows or scientific workers. He thinks Brunton will agree, and therefore should deprecate any authorization by any Fellow to do so, although it is unpleasant to seem harsh on a struggler for existence.
