| Description | Apologises for not being able to meet Speyer at Lothbury Street as he proposed, as he was away from home and his telegram was only now placed into his hands. Geikie shall endeavour to be at the Mansion House on Monday half an hour before the Committee meets [to discuss the funds regarding Robert Falcon Scott's Terra Nova expedition]. Gives particulars about the balance from the 'Discovery' funds. The Treasury stipulated that the balance amounting to £326-19-1 should not be expended until the Treasury found that no unsatisfied claim of the Government remained.
The proper course to be followed is that the Royal Society, to which the Treasury stipulation was addressed, should enquire from the Treasury whether any such claim exists, and if it does not, that the Society should request authority to have the balance paid over to the Mansion House Committee.
Geikie has been in communication with the authorities of the British Museum on the subject of the expenses that will be incurred in paying the salaries of the different individuals who will be engaged in the preparation of the geological and biological volumes which the trustees have undertaken to publish. As the trustees have no means of defraying these expenses, the cost must be borne out of the Mansion House funds. The sum required is calculated at not less than £5250. But this estimate is made entirely in the dark as to the amount of material there will be.
Besides the volumes to be prepared and published under the auspices of the trustees of the British Museum, there are the volumes which will contain the physical results. A sum of at least £10500 should be reserved for these. Then provision must be made for the production or publication of the volumes. The trustees of the British Museum have undertaken this charge for the geological and biological series, so that the Society only has to consider the physical. The printing and engraving of five volumes of the 'Discovery' expedition cost £3500. A good deal more will likely be needed this time. Sees that Clements Markham has put down £9154 for the cost of publication, and Geikie is disposed to let that estimate stand. If any funds are left over, there will be no difficulty in finding proper use for it. |
