Title | Copy letter from Robert William Frederick Harrison, to the Gassiot Committee (Professor [Ernest] Rutherford, Fellow of the Royal Society) |
Date | 4 June 1913 |
Description | A reported to the Gassiot Committee in October 1911, Matthew Gray made a donation of £200 for 'the purposes of seismological work at Eskdalemuir Observatory'. The Council in accepting this donation passed a resolution to the effect that it is desirable that the donation is devoted to equipment or experiments in seismology. Dr [William Napier] Shaw, Director of the Meteorological Office, is anxious that he should be authorized to apply for this grant now to the payment for a third year of a seismological assistant, maintained so far by a grant from the Royal Society of £400 for two years.
The President, Treasurer and Professor [Arthur] Schuster agree in thinking that this will be an appropriate and desirable application of Gray's donation, and if the members of the Gassiot Committee will signify their opinions by memo, the desired authority may be conveyed to Shaw without convening a meeting of the committee. |
