| Description | Ha received his letter addressed to the Chairman of the Library Committee, and will of course lay the proposals before the Committee when they meet. Harrison is sorry that he did not mention his criticisms of the Library to him first. Sympathises with much of what he saus, but one or two policies which have guided practice for a long time ought to be explained.
It is not so much a question of money, as of space, that has tied the hands of the Committee in the acquisition of new books. In spite of the incorporation of one of the store rooms downstairs as an integral part of the Library the constant pressure on shelving makes a standing hindrance. Regarding specialist books, because of the issues with space, the Committee have been against the purchase of books which are to be found in the libraries of the specialist Societies in Burlington House, and these societies have always extended hospitality to Fellows who wish to consult their books.
The solution appeaes to be in the direction of some form of amalgamation and recognised consultation between the scientific libraries, in Burlington House at any rate, to avoid duplications, and render the several libraries available in common to the members. That is merely Harrison's personal opinion, but he knows it is shared by a good many Fellows. |
