Title | Copy letter from Robert William Frederick Harrison, to Dr Arthur [Alcock] Rambaut, Fellow of the Royal Society |
Date | 9 June 1914 |
Description | An application has been received from the Hydrographic Department of the Admiralty for information with regard to the exact positions of the observing stations used at the last Transit of Venus 1882. The published account in the Blues book only gives the latitude and longitude without any bearings of surrounding bojects, and Harrison has been unable to discover here any records giving further particulars. Has applied to the Astronomer Royal and he also can throw no light on it.
Dr E J Stone superintended all the arrangements of that expedition and it has occurred to Harrison that, if more precise reports were given by the observers and were not thought worth publishing they might possibly have been preserved at the Radcliffe. On the other hand, the observers may have had a general instruction that latitude and longitude positions were sufficient for the purposes of the expedition. Harrison shall be much obliged by having any information which he possesses on the subject. |
