Title | Copy letter from Robert William Frederick Harrison, to Sir Sidney Burrard, Fellow of the Royal Society |
Date | 29 July 1914 |
Description | Had his letter of 7 July together with his official letter covering the paper, but the paper itself has not arrived. When it comes it will be officially acknowledged, and Harrison will do his best about seeing the proofs through the press, assuming of course that it is accepted for publication.
A short time ago there arrived a few copies of a memo by Dr Mason, with charts of the work connecting the triangulation of India and Russia. Harrison showed it to Professor [Arthur] Schuster and he thought it would be very interesting to the Observatories Committee of the Society, but Harrison has only four copies, not enough to go around. Harrison understands privately from the India Office that it is not yet an official publication and so copies cannot be obtained from there. Asks for about another 20 copies for information.
Harrison is planning to visit the Solent and shall be no doubt at Yarmouth, but his headquarters will be at a little cottage at Lymington. Hopes to do a good deal of sailing, but the threatening state of affairs all around makes him feel doubtful of everything [outbreak of First World War]. |
