TitleCopy letter from James Hopwood Jeans, Secretary of the Royal Society; to Lord Rayleigh [Robert John Strutt], FRS
Date21 December 1923
DescriptionInforms Lord Rayleigh [Robert John Strutt] that [Frank Edward] Smith has reported favourably on J. E. P. Wagstaff's paper 'An Electrical Method of Determining the Velocity of Detonation of Explosives', and with some editing it should be printed in the Proceedings. Also informs Rayleigh that D. H. Bangham and F. P. Burt's paper 'The Behaviour of Gases in Contact with Glass Surfaces' as been reported on favourably by [Francis William] Aston and [Herbert Brereton] Baker, although it is very long; asks what to do about the length, and whether it should be sent to a third referee for comment. Discusses [Charles Herbert] Lees' favourable report on 'The Ratio of the Specific Heats of Nitrogen and of Oxygen' by [James Riddick] Partington and A. B. Howe, commuicated by Professor [Harold Baily] Dixon, and asks for a suggestion for a second referee. Also discusses [Charles Herbert] Lees' favourable report on the paper 'On the velocity of sound in gases and vapours, and the ratio of the specific heats' by Professor [Harold Baily] Dixon and [Gilbert] Greenwood, which should be published; asks whether it is worth bothering Dixon about minor edits. Informs Rayleigh of a new paper, 'The Electrode Potentials and the Energy of Solvation' by [Jaroslav] Heyrovsky, communicated by [Frederick George] Donnan; the paper's first referee could not make up his mind, so it was then sent to Sir James Walker who gave it a favourable report, but thinks it should be sent again as the paper has recently been criticised. Finally, informs Rayleigh that [Owen Willans] Richardson has communicated the paper ''Experiments on the emission of electrons under the influence of chemical action' by [Manfred] Brotherton. Asks for a suggestion for a referee for this paper.
