Title | Copy letter from James Hopwood Jeans, Secretary of the Royal Society; to [Sydney] Chapman |
Date | 13 June 1924 |
Description | Informs Chapman on 3 papers. 1: That the length of the paper 'The possible ellipticity of Saturn's ring' by Goldbrough has been re-estimated to 27 pages in proceedings at least and contrary to Chapman's wish to condense it, Jeans suggests it be moved to Transactions, as a previous paper by Goldbrough appeared there (Philosophical Transactions. A Vol. 222 p.101). Asks Chapman to suggest a second referee for this. 2: That both Watson and Whittaker have reported favourably to the paper 'The electrification of two parallel circular discs' by Nicholson. As publishing the paper at its current length will cost £80, Whittaker suggest asking Nicholson to cut the paper to the equivalent of £50. States this is not usual practice and Jeans suggests circulating the matter to the Mathematics Committee to decide upon it. 3: Asks for a referee suggestion for the paper 'The vibrations of a stretched membrane of non-uniform surface density' by E.L. Ince and communicated by Love. Suggests Lamb as the paper may be too mathematical for Taylor. |
