Title | Copy letter from James Hopwood Jeans, Secretary of the Royal Society; to [Robert John Strutt] Lord Rayleigh, FRS |
Date | 24 July 1924 |
Description | Informs [Robert John Strutt] Lord Rayleigh of 8 matters. 1: Gives thanks for the report on Atkinson's paper ['Note on Vegard's theory of the Aurora'] and his comments on it. Has asked McLennan for a second report. 2: Following Strutt's suggestion and Lindemann's favourable report on Lunt's two papers 'Chemical studies in gaseous ionisation, part I and part II', the paper was sent to Townsend. Townsed reported adversely but only on points of detail. States that Lindemann suggests amalgamating the papers into one and publishing it in Proceedings, which the author disagrees with. Asks if Strutt can suggest a third referee to resolve this, or if the communicator of the paper, Donnan, should asked to consider the matter of publication. 3: Asks if the paper 'The determination of molecular fields Part III' by J. E. Jones, communicated by [Sydney] Chapman should be published straight away, as both Jeans and Chapman see it has of high quality, or sent to a referee as Parts I and II were. 4: Asks for a referee suggestion for the paper 'The stokes-einstein law for diffusion in solution' by Christina Miller, communicated by Sir James Walker. Suggests Whetham, although questions his knowledge on the subject is up to date. 5: Asks if the paper 'Ultraviolet Spectrophotometry' by Merton should be published straight away or sent to a referee. 6: Asks for a referee suggestion for the paper 'The effect of superposed alternating current on the polarisable primary cell. Part 1' by A.J Allmand and V.S. Puri, communicated by Smiles. Notes that Donnan has been slow with reports lately. 7: States that McLennan was apologetic about the standard of the last paper he last communicated, which is to be part of a series the Ultraviolet spectra. Asks for a referee suggestion for the new paper communicated 'The spark spectra of indium and gallium in the extreme ultraviolet region' by Mollie Weinberg. Notes that [Alfred] Folwer will be travelling to Toronto. 8: Asks if the paper 'The constants of the rydberg-ritz equation' by J.H.Jones and J.C.Boyce, communicated by O. W Richardson should be published straight away to send to a referee. Notes that the paper is worth publishing. Includes a P.S at the end of the letter stating that McLennan now favours publishing Aktinson's paper in full in Proceedings. |
