TitleCopy letter from Michael Foster, to Dr Ludwig Mond, [Fellow of the Royal Society]
Date16 March 1894
DescriptionFoster explains that Mond's generous promise of 2000 pounds to help in the Catalogue, was understood as being intended for the production of a subject index for the Catalogue already published. This had been their plan for some time, but in the midst of their work they have heard that there is some probability of such a subject index being compiled in America by American authorities.

The President and Counil of the Royal Society are inclined to believe it to be in the best interest of science if they were to approve of such an index being compiled in America, and devote their labours towards the more rapid issue of the Catalogue itself rather than spending time on the subject index. They of course cannot proceed in this plan until they have ascertained whether Mond would approve of his gift being applied to the Catalogue itself rather than the subject index.
