TitleCopy letter from George Gabriel Stokes, to Rear Amédée Ernest Barthélemy Mouchez, Director of the Observatory of Paris
Date21 September 1886
DescriptionApologises for the delay in replying to Mouchez's letter of 18 August. There is a unanimous opinion that it is very desirable to invite the sort of conference Mouchez proposes. It should be clearly understood that those astronomers who assemble will carefully examine the ? employed by the Messrs Henry. They do not by attending the conference pledge themselves to the adoption of these or any other methods but are perfectly free to discuss the whole question and to adopt whichever methods they choose. The Council of the Royal Society will not meet for another month and it is much desirable no time should be lost. As Stokes feels no doubt what the opinion of the Council would be he will take it upon himself as President to express officially the approval of the Royal Society toa conference of astronomers in Paris for the purpose of discussing and deciding on a plan, intended for international adoption, for obtaining by the aid of photography a map of the 'whole stary treasures'.
