TitleCopy letter from Michael Foster, to the Secretary, Her Majesty's Treasury
Date21 February 1887
DescriptionThe Secretary's letter of 3 February 1887 has been laid before the President and Council of the Royal Society and Foster is directed to reply that it is the intention of the President and Council that the copy of the Catalogue [of Scientific Papers] which they desired the Lords to grant to the University of Giessen, should be taken from the 250 copies reserved for gratuitous distribution to institutions and persons recommended by the Society. Foster provides references to Mr W R Greig's letter of 15 January 1868 and H M Treasury's letter of 9 May 1885. The President and Council thought it unnecessary to mention these 250 copies in their letter of 26 January since so long as these are not exhausted it is to these that any recommendation would naturally apply. The President and Council have not learnt that this reserve is yet exhausted and desire to state that the University has produced no small share of the scientific work recorded in the Catalaogue, and is in their opinion a suitable institution to receive one of the copies so reserved.
