TitleCopy letter from Michael Foster, to Sir Saul Samuel, Agent-General for New South Wales, Westminster Chambers, 9 Victoria Street, S.W.
Date5 March 1896
DescriptionFoster, on behalf of the President and Council of the Royal Society, asks if the Agent-General can kindly lend their assistance to an exhibition under the auspices of the Society, directed by Professor W J [William Johnson] Sollas, to bore a coral reef in the Pacific.

He explains that Her Majesty's Ship 'Penguin' leaves Sydney on 1 May to convey the exhibition party to the reef. He also states that diamonds have been purchased for the boring apparatus, but that these are not due to arrive in England until after the departure of Sollas, but before 20 March. Foster asks if they would be willing to do the Society the service of conveying the diamonds to Sydney in their mail bags leaving England on 20 March or the following mail. If so, Foster provides the address to which the diamonds should be directed. He is uncertain whether he should ask if they could also insure the diamonds, but if they are able, he asks that the bill for this be sent to the Society, and gives their value as 450 pounds. If they cannot arrange this, the Society will take out is own insurance.
