TitleCopy letter from Michael Foster and Arthur William Rucker, to Sir Thomas Henry Sanderson, Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Foreign Office, S.W.
Date3 November 1898
DescriptionProvides a summary of the events of the recent international conference latterly held in furtherance of the project for an International Catalogue of Scientific Literature, which Rucker asks Sanderson to communicate to the Marquis of Salisbury. Copies of the acta are enclosed sufficient to supply each Government with two copies as well as two copies for each of the delegates [no enclosures]. A verbatim report of the whole proceedings of the Conference is in preparation and copies will be forwarded in due course.

Foster and Rucker express the regret of the Society that the Italian and Russian Governments were not represented at the Conference. The Royal Society will be pleased to make known to the provisional International Committee any names which the Italian or Russian Government may desire to propose to that body, with the view of their being co-opted. The number of representatives of the Biological Sciences on the Committee is relatively small and could with advantage be increased. Draws attention to the resolution regarding language.

The Government of Denmark sent no delegate but expressed its satisfaction with the proposals which had been made by the Society. Asks the Secretary of State to convey to the Danish Government the request that in the absence of a delegate from that country, steps may be taken to organize a local committee charged with studying all questions relating to the catalogue.

Trusts the Marquis of Salisbury will convey to those Governments which took part in the conference, the grateful appreciation of the cordial co-operation by the delegates in the conference. Thanks the Marquis for the trouble he has taken in furthering the catalogue movement.
