Description | Harrison and Dr [Joseph] Larmor supposed that a new Royal Medal die was being prepared but did not know how far advanced it was and Larmor's criticisms of the general design were mentioned in case there might still be time for re-considering it. The general criticisms must now be ignored except that if the depth of the rim can be reduced, it would be desirable to lighten the appearance of the medal.
Regarding the diagram, Harrison and Larmor had the original perturbation diagram in the 'Principia' before them and it was after a comparison of the lead squeeze with that diagram that the answer was given to the specific question addressed to Harrison as to the lettering of the diagram, i.e. that the two figures should be left as they are, as shown in the lead squeeze, without the addition of any other lettering to the perturbation figure, and without modification of the solar system figure. |
