Title Copy letter from Robert William Frederick Harrison to Professor A [Arthur] Schuster, Secretary of the Royal Society
Date8 January 1913
DescriptionHarrison has Schuster's letter with Walker's paper, which he has reported to the Chairman. Southwell's paper will be similarly reported to the Mathematics Chairman. Harrison addresses each paragraph of Schuster's memorandum with reference to the historical portion os it, mainly with regard to the question of the length of papers for Proceedings. Harrison encloses a resolution of Council, March 1910 which states that the Proceedings should be reserved for short papers.
He writes that it has not been the practice in all cases of summary jurisdiction to obtain the concurrence of the Chairman, in earlier practice under the Standing Orders the jurisdiction was exercised only on short papers, longer ones being reserved for the Sectional Committees. Where references have differed it has nearly always been submitted to a third referee.
