TitleCopy letter from Dr. Arthur Schuster, Secretary of the Royal Society; to the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research; Great George Street, Westminster, S.W.
Date1 June 1917
DescriptionRefers to the future control of the National Physical Laboratory. Expresses, on behalf of the Council, discontent with certain provisions put forth by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. Firstly, while the Council recognises that with the financial responsibility passing to the Department, limits will be imposed on the Society's control of the Laboratory. However, notes that these limits should not interfere with the Society's power of directing the scientific policy of the insitution. Secondly, disputes the provision that the Society will have only a consultative vocie in the appointment of the Director of the Laboratory, stating that they attach great importance to the maintenance of their right to nominate the Director. Thirdly, disputes the provision that the Committee of Council may override the opinion and dissent of the Society. Suggests amendments to wording and phrasing of the Department's current scheme on these grounds.
