TitleCopy letter from [Sir] Arthur Schuster, FRS, Secretary of the Royal Society; to [Sir Richard Tetley] Glazebrook, FRS
Date7 August 1919
DescriptionRequests advice on Oxley's paper, 'The influence of molecular constitution and temperature on magnetic susceptibility.' Advises SWJ [Samuel Walter Johnson] Smith, FRS, had only time to skim read the paper and said it was not 'uninteresting,' but very 'discursive.' [Thomas Henry] Havelock, FRS, advised publication in the 'Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society.' Richardson advised it was diffuse, did not include new experimental data by the author, and the opposite argument could be made just as effectively with most of the evidence. Schuster advises it is more a general discussion on the state of a branch of science, rather than a report on original work, but he is in favour of publication in the 'Transactions' as it should be published, and cannot see where else this might take place. He thinks it cannot be shortened without losing its general value to non-specialists. Advises there is a block on the publication of the 'Transactions' so the issue can stand until Sir Richard Glazebrook can call a meeting of the Committee. Advises a copy of the paper will be sent to him if he wishes to look through it.
