TitleCopy letter from James Hopwood Jeans, Secretary of the Royal Society; to H. M. Treasury
Date14 July 1926
DescriptionAsks for the Lord Commissioners of H. M. Treasury to sanction that all International Scientific Subscriptions be placed on a gold basis to avoid the current situation. Due to the collapse of the value of the French Franc, the Royal Society has money left over from subscriptions to various international scientific unions made on behalf of the country. This also means that many of these unions are low on funds. Prof. [Herbert Hall] Turner, of the International Geodesy and Geophysics has found it difficult to continue his work with 200 observatories around the world. The Royal Society has voted to give £200 annually to alieviate the situation, which will be a short term solution if the Treasury agrees to the proposal.
