Title | Paper, 'On the homology between genital ducts and nephridia in the Oligochaeta' by Frank E [Evers] Beddard |
Date | 1890 |
Description | Beddard writes: 'It is usually stated in text books that the genital ducts of the Oligochaeta are homologous with nephridia; but nevertheless the question is one which has not yet been satisfactorily settled, for the total independence of the two structures in Lumbricus and those aquatic Oligochaeta of which the development is know n is a difficulty in the way of accepting this view. Claparèdo, who first clearly formulated the arguments in favour of regarding the genital ducts as slightly modified nephridia, made a mistake in stating that the genital segments of the aquatic Oligochaeta contain no nephridia; this error was pointed out by Vejdovský who discovered that the genital segments are originally furnished with nephridia, which atrophy on the ripening of the sexual products and the appearance of their ducts.'
