Recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions, no modifications seem to be necessary and all the illustrations are necessary and can be easily reproduced. The paper is a valuable contribution to a difficult and interesting subject. After going over the same ground as has been traveresed by others, the author has extended the research in various directions with the aid of new and improved methods. The numerical data supplied are of much value.
