Title | Referee's report by Augustus Edward Hugh Love, on a paper 'The pear shaped and other figures of equilibrium of a rotating mass of liquid' by George Howard Darwin |
Date | 8 October 1901 |
Description | Sectional committee: Mathematics
Recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions in full, provided the paper on 'Ellipsoidal Harmonies' presented by the same author in June 1901 is also published there. It is necessary to set right the argument on page 28 where two slips have been made which cancel each other. It would be desirable to point out how to pass from the condition on page 29 for the vanishing of a coefficient of stability, to that given by Poincaré, 'Acta. Math.', VII, page 321. It is not obvious whether the condition found by the author is in agreement with that given by Poincaré or not. The paper marks a distinct step forward in knowledge of the possible figures that can be assumed by a mass of liquid rotating under the influence of its own gravitation. The method is so closely connected with that of the paper on 'Ellipsoidal Harmonies', that its value would be very much diminished unless the two papers can be read together. Provides details of the 'slip' he finds on page 28 of the manuscript. These notes annotated in another hand regarding his necessary' and 'desirable' modifications as described above.
