Title | Referee's report by Hans Friedrich Gadow, on a paper 'The anatomy of symmetrical double monstrosities in the trout' by James Fairlie Gemmill |
Date | March 1901 |
Description | Sectional Committee: Zoology
Not recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions. Pages six to 14 are unnecessary and state well know facts. Pages 15-47 contain 'tedious' descriptions which could be much shortened, side by side with text figures. The whole paper might be condensed to half its present size. Concerning the illustrations, nearly all the figures on plates one to five are unnecessarily large, but owing to their being badly drawn they wold not bear being reduced by direct process work. Photographic figures such as those on plates six to eleven are notoriously of very little value to the reader. A few clearly drawn diagrams would be more to the point. The study has not yielded any new results of importance. He is doubtful that this kind of descriptive research would contribute much to the solution of the general question beyond the state in which an already extensive literature has left it.
