Title | Referee's report by Sidney Frederic Harmer, on a paper 'The structure of the gills of the lamellibranchia' by W G Ridewood |
Date | 19 May 1902 |
Description | Sectional Committee: Zoology
Recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions, in full on the grounds that it is an important contribution to the comparative study of the structure of the Lamellibranch gill. It does not contain any general conclusions of striking novelty. The expression 'tendency to vary' hardly expresses the author's meaning. The explanation of a 'permanently altered metabolism' appears weak. The suggestion of the provisional name Poromya alaskana on page 150 is not justifiable. The author should either take the responsibility of describing the new species with a sufficient diagnosis, or should withdraw a name which the author proposes to treat as a synonym when Dr Doll's account of the same species is published. The illustrations which are semi-diagramatic are very carefully drawn, and are admirably adapted for illustrating the author's results. The paper seems likely to remain for time time as one of the most complete and satisfactory accounts of the subject with which it deals. It is largely confirmatory of the results of Peck, Pelseneer and other writers to whose work ample justice is done.
