Title | Letter from Arthur Schuster, on his paper 'Some definite integrals and a new method of reducing a function of spherical coordinates to a series of spherical harmonics' to Joseph Larmor |
Date | 4 August 1902 |
Description | Sectional Committee: not stated.
Encloses Chree's report [not attached] and thanks him for the enormous trouble he must have taken with it. States that he had worked out most of the equations in question 'before Adams had appeared', but never meant to give them as original as they must have been deduced many times before. Thinks the referee has terrestrial magnetism too much on his mind and Schuster purposefully kept the analysis general as the paper only deals with the expression of a function over a sphere. All reference to 'vertical force' would have been out of place. Queries some of the conclusions of Chree's report but will not quarrel with Chree regarding the matter. Hopes Larmor has had a holiday. He has been on holiday with his family for ten days and it has rained everyday.
