Recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions except that the portions of the introduction which refer to the award of the jury of the French Academy, and are of a controversial manner, should be omitted. This part was rejected by the Secretary as unsuitable for the abstract in the Proceedings and the same objections would hold. It might be desirable that the proof of the theorem on pages 21-23 should be given for the general case and not only with the special assumption made in the proof given. The author is right in saying that his results are not of a similar character to those given in Darboux's memoir 'sur les fonctions de très-grands nombre'. This opinion has influenced Hobson in the recommendation made above.
