Title | Referee's report by Francis Wall Oliver, on a paper 'The microsporangia of the pteridospermeae, with remarks on their relationship to existing groups' by Robert Kidston |
Date | December 1905 |
Description | Sectional Committee: Botany
Recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions, in full and without modification. All the illustrations should be reproduced. The paper is an extremely important one, completing their knowledge of the nature of the reproductive organs of the Lyginodendron. It contains a masterly analysis of the fossil evidence. Though it is unlikely that such a cautious observer as Kidston should have been deceived as to the bilocular character of the sporangia, it should be borne in mind that he is relying upon fossils preserved as impressions to yield the sort of evidence for which petrifactions are usually required. It is conceivable that the appearances may have tricked him and as the matter is of considerable importance, Oliver thinks the Society should refer the paper to the most experienced referee available in this department, Dr D H Scott.
