Title | Referee's report by Henry Frederick Baker, on a paper 'The differential invariants of space' by Andrew Russell Forsyth |
Date | August 1903 |
Description | Sectional Committee: Mathematics
Recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions, in full if the author wishes it, or if he thinks Baker's suggestions are not workable. Recomends possible pages to omit and gives 'four trifling suggestions'. Annotated by JL [Joseph Larmor] on 10 August that the Chairman of the Mathematical Committee might perhaps accept the paper and send a copy of the marked suggestions of the referees for the use of the author before going to press. Baker thinks the point of the paper is in fact the successful accomplishment of the solution of 57 partial differential equations. He cannot give sufficient time to speak with great certainty regarding its value and thinks it should be referred to a student of line geometry. While proposing to be about ordinary space it is in fact about special quadratic complexes. It is not the generalisation of the preceding paper relating to any surface. Suggests an alternative method that Forsyth might employ in his calculations.
